Oxford Circus is a typology of 24 dissected photographs, showing pedestrians around London’s famous shopping district, caught between the fixed gaze of the camera and the watchful eyes of advertisement models. The work investigates the rhetorics of both fashion and street photography – and hence a tension as old as the medium between the staged and the real, the picture and the document. With a pervasive culture of consumption and individualism as its subject matter, it also reflects on the politics of representation in such a culture’s ubiquitous use of imagery.
